What They Took Didn’t Break Me
They Used Me, I Used That Lesson
They told me to be nice and the world will clap
I was nice and ended up holding the door while they robbed my peace
Do good they said and Allah will reward you
I did and they called me a fool and borrowed more
The one who lies with confidence becomes a leader
The one who speaks truth becomes too intense
People wear fake respect like weekend clothes
Pressed from outside wrinkled within
I gave him honest advice and he blocked me
I stayed quiet and now they say I’m arrogant
I carried their load through storms
When I slipped they walked over me like stones
They said silence is golden
Yes especially when truth costs you your seat at the table
I helped him cross the river and he stole my boat
Now I swim but at least I don’t carry ungrateful people
They told me not to expect
I agreed and now I lend nothing but advice
People say God sees everything
But when I say the same they hide their wallets
Everyone wants peace but no one wants to stop shouting
They want truth but only if it favors their own version
I laughs not because life is easy
But because crying didn’t work either
